| NOTA: Jim McClarin Callischyrus insignis, Yanay1-28-11__0048 Found sitting on a trailside leaf. The colorful erotylids like to display themselves on leaves by day (maybe just the females hoping for a male companion) and can often be grabbed before they fly. I never see them in number, only once every several days or so. I have to amend my remark about never seeing them in number. There can be quite a few gathered on their preferred fungus species. Also, it strikes me that instead of posing for a mate they are instead awaing a waft of fungal aroma to steer them to their next home, where they are most likely to find a mate. The bold colors are probably to advertise to predators that they are foul tasting, although I don't know that for a fact. Fotografía tomada en enero 29, 2011 |
